As a result, violence has been tightly interwoven into Uncle Sams social fabric, evidenced by the slogan, "Guns, guts and glory made  America great," which is not simply a bumper sticker, but for many citizens of the twenty-first century, it has become a way of life, with particular emphasis on the guns.  Handguns have emerged as a popular weapon of choice for its affordability, concealment and ease of use. They are inescapable and can be found in most homes, many  businesses and have been turning up with increasing regularity in US classrooms. As homicide rates increase across America, so, too, have the sale of handguns. Ironically, the more  people who die as the result of handguns, the more people purchase them as a means of protecting their safety. Handgun violence, which is now even indiscriminately claiming the  lives of innocent children, has reached epidemic proportions. The government has enacted several legislative measures in an effort to control the sale of handguns, but stops short of proclaiming  them illegal because of their historical status as an American right of ownership. But the time has come for the government to alter its passive stance and act to  preserve the lives of the citizens it is sworn to protect. Handguns cannot be controlled; they must be eliminated altogether, and the only effective means of accomplishing this is  by amending the Constitution to make them illegal. The issue of handguns is diverse in scope, and because it affects every person living in America regardless of age, color or  socioeconomic status, making them illegal is the only possible recourse for lawmakers of the twenty-first century.
