Introduction Unilever is a well known international company, employing more than 174,000 people, which states that  "Our mission is to add Vitality to life. We meet everyday needs for nutrition, hygiene and personal care with brands that help people look good, feel good and get more  out of life" (Unilever, 2009). The company has grown from one with relatively humble origins more than a century ago in  a multimillion dollar corporation that operates across the globe in a number of different product areas. However, like many of the companies it has faced call and is facing a  number of challenges. The strategy utilized by the firm appears to be one all the carefully controlled diversification, with a high level of reliance placed on the utilization of brand  names and at the way that these can be leveraged within the market place. In order to understand a company, how it is reached his current success, and to determine  the way in which it may continue to compete, the organization needs to be examined within its context, looking at the way that it has competed, the market it competes  as well as the potential influence of purposes.
