We now know that UPS operates under the same corporate philosophy that is reflected in those front line employees with  direct customer contact. SWOT Analysis ? UPS has an extremely loyal customer base. Even during the strike when customers were forced to find other means of shipping their  packages and documents, customers were eager for the company to return to operation. ? UPS management realizes the potential value to the company of participation in electronic commerce. It lowers  their operational costs and prevents any union-directed full shutdown of the company. ? Global operation results in UPS being less dependent on the continued economic expansion of only the US.  ? It is the Teamsters Union that is present within UPS, because of the organization and classification of the company. UPS most important competitor is Federal Express, which is  unionized under airline, rather than trucking industry, rules. If a portion of Federal Express employees strike, remaining ones can still work. UPS alignment with the trucking industry results  in full shut-down during any strike. ? Company growth is closely tied to the state of business activity and therefore the state of the economy. Significant downturn in the economy  could adversely affect the companys continued growth. ? The company has invested in electronic document delivery that is far more than simple email that is free from other sources.  UPS offers secure electronic document delivery using their free software and for less cost to the customer than physical delivery. The system can be beneficial to a wide  range of customers and insulate UPS from the full effects of any future strike action against the company. ?
