the truth of the matter is that a small percentage has gained far too much influence over peoples lives in their ongoing quest for civil harmony. "A culture whose  highest priorities include self-aggrandizement, not to mention entertainment, bears marked resemblances to, shall we say, less successful cultures. Like that of the late Roman Empire" (Murchison, 1998, p. 25A).  At issue is whether or not utilitarianism has a place in the framework of global civilization and if it does, to what extent is this association deemed beneficial or  disadvantageous. Indeed, utilitarianism claims to work for the benefit of the greater good, however, it fails to take into account the consideration of the lesser numbers, who continue to  represent yet another group whose interests are routinely ignored. The concept of a rational society, in which the entire community is greatly influenced  by principles its members completely and accept without challenge, has indeed proven to be one of the most powerful standards of our culture. There exist a great many economic  philosophies by which people live their lives. These philosophies help maintain order and a sense of direction that otherwise would merely drift in subconscious thought. John Stuart Mill  fit into the general history of political, economic and social thought by applying his interpretation of society and the utilitarian philosophies by which it should abide.  The concept of utilitarianism speaks well to the economic stance Mill supported.
