modernity, and looks at a variety of aspects. A focal point is when Louis XIII re-ignited a trend for males to wear wigs. Bibliography lists 3 sources. SA122wig.rtf Wigs  have always been a part of the culture from the icon who wants to make a radical change in color or style in a flash to the married Jewish woman  who is supposed to keep her head covered. It has also been a significant part of appearance for men as well. Today, many men wear toupees, but the term wig  is generally reserved for women. Still, going back through history, wigs have always been rather popular. In ancient times, the term "dress" included a modification of appearance and encompassed a  great deal more than clothes; accessories such as beards, wigs, and cosmetics were seen as a part of dressing (DeBrohun 18). Those in ancient cultures were thought to use wigs  to shield themselves from the sun as well. Wigs became a practical, and not just a decorative matter. It is hard to pinpoint the exact date when the wig came  into existence. It should suffice to say that the wig has been with people for quite a long time. However, from the time that the ancient peoples wore wigs, there  was some gap until the latter part of the Middle Ages. It was not until the sixteenth century that the wig became a generally acceptable form of adornment  or at least a corrective for natures defects ("Wig" PG). Queen Elizabeth I is an example (PG). Mens perukes, or what were called periwigs, were worn for the first time  since they had been apparent in ancient Egypt (PG). They came into widespread use during the stint of Louis XIII as King of France (PG).
