    Close was in Zaire during the first outbreak of the disease. The novel represents a true life event and is evaluated in terms of characterization but non-fictional elements are discussed  as well. Actual information about Ebola is presented. Bibliography lists 3 sources. SA146Ebo.rtf The novel called Ebola is more than just a novel. It is a work  based on a true life story. Yet, in the book are characters which are larger than life, and each plays his or her own role. The novel is based on  the first outbreak of Ebola Zaire in 1976 and the author creates an accurate account of the outbreak. The story takes place at a Catholic Mission in Yambuku. Yambuku  is in Zaire and hence that name for the virus Ebola Zaire. The work is again based on fact so one cannot surmise that the author created characters which were  religious to make a point. Rather, the religious factor is present because it was a part of the story. Prior to the outbreak of the dreaded disease, the mission was  rather peaceful. It was run by and large by Flemish nuns and the idea that the mission would get destroyed in anyway was unconscionable. Little did these religious people know  that they would face an insurmountable medical problem. Ebola was on its way. It should also be noted that the author is a medical doctor and just happens to  be the father of actress Glenn Close. Dr. Close devoted his time to helping the people of Africa and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong  time, or perhaps the right place at the right time. No matter how one wants to look at it, Closes contribution to containing the outbreak was important. At the same
