    historically filled. Take the frontier days for example. During that period, about the only professional work a woman did was to teach school. Women were mainly confined  to the home to cook, clean, care for children and the like. There wasnt time for these women to have a career as their work was extremely labor intensive.  In fact, just washing the clothes was an all-day affair. Then the era of technology emerged and with it brought more freedom from household responsibilities. Suddenly, washing machines  and dryers did in hours what used to take all day of manual labor. Stoves, appliances and convenience foods cut back drastically on food preparation time. People began  to move into the cities and away from their labor-intensive farms as the economy began to focus more on technology. World War II brought a huge shift in the traditional  paradigm. Women entered the workforce en masse and labored at jobs in all sorts of professions since many of the men were off fighting the war. Women became  accustomed to working and many enjoyed their work. Therefore, after the war this trend continued, as it does today, to bring more and more women into the workplace. And  still, when we think back to the 1950s and 1960s, one cannot help but conjure up images of womens roles versus mens work roles. Women were teachers and nurses  while men were firefighters and doctors. Women were secretaries while men were company executives. Clearly, women had not reached any level of equality. While they were a  significant part of the workforce, there was certainly a great deal of disparity in terms of equality. Today, there is more opportunity than ever for women. It isnt
