SA127wk.rtf I. Introduction  Dishonesty is a pervasive problem in todays society. While dishonesty may come in a variety of forms, from telling a white  lie to holding up a bank, there are small examples of dishonesty in the workplace that many people think little about. Workers take desk supplies home from their places of  business. It may be a scissor that is worth no more that two dollars, or it may be a machine that is worth several hundred dollars, but each incident equals  a dishonest act. While few people will try to sneak out large items from their places of business, it is the petty thievery that often adds up to large dollars,  more than most employees would imagine. While petty theft in the workplace is a part of American culture, the costs to businesses can  be overwhelming, particularly for small businesses that cannot afford such a burden. In evaluating employee theft, one wonders why people who are otherwise honest, law-abiding citizens can turn into thieves  when they leave their workplaces in the evening. What compels a person to steal? There are a variety of rationalizations that employees embrace and there are also several conditions that  make stealing easier to achieve. Five conditions that are conducive to theft, along with seven rationalizations will help to shed light on this significant problem in American business culture.  II.
