Almost every business is automated in todays world where commerce evolves around computers and  the Internet. However, some workers have made complaints that the radiation that perhaps seeps through the unit is potentially dangerous. Not only have suggestions that what emanates from the terminals  may cause miscarriages or birth defects, information that using the VDU may be harmful to eyesight and create other maladies are theories that have been circulating over the course of  the past two decades. Are these theories true or are they just speculation by the general public, or even warnings from alarmists that worry about every new innovation? The answer  is not clear cut as research has been limited or poorly conducted, but there are some links that are worth looking into. Using computers of course does also warrant care  and attention to ergonomics. There are many complaints that stem from sitting in front of VDUs. Upper-limb pains as well as discomfort can flow through the arm, hand and shoulder  areas as a result of computer usage(Lilley, 1993). Such discomfort can range from temporary fatigue to chronic soft-tissue disorders like peritendinitis (1993). Eyesight is another concern. While current medical evidence  has shown that the use of display-screen equipment is not associated with damage to eyes some workers complain of temporary visual fatigue (1993).
