is a love story, or a hopeful and dysfunctional love story, it is also a story of families and the connections that these families share. Although there are a few  characters who truly do love their family and feel devoted to their families, and the memories of their families, for the most part Brontes tale is one where family means  nothing and the love that exists within the family structure is weak and easily tossed aside in the face of selfishness and lust. In the following paper we examine Brontes  story, illustrating how the family is not a strong unit, and the love within the families is not as strong as the love the characters have for themselves.  Love Within the Family One of the most powerful and loving family members in this story is the Catherines father. He seems to be a loyal and devoted family man  who truly loves his children and family. He is the kindest man we see presented in the story, yet he dies early and seems to impart nothing of family devotion  and love to his daughter or his son, both of whom seem to disintegrate and fall apart in the real world. Before Catherines father died Heathcliff, the main male  character, was treated fairly well by the family, but after Mr. Earnshaws death he is used and ridiculed by Hindley, Catherines brother. Hindley obviously learned nothing of kindness and family  love from his father. From there on out, with the intense love he has for Catherine, Heathcliff proceeds to get what he wants at any cost, even the cost of  his son and Catherines sister-in-law. We see that Heathcliff has no devotion to his son, no real love of his son, or his wife, who is Catherines sister. He only
