Bryan Babcock for the Paperstore, Inc., January  2001 Introduction The short theater piece Art has moved from its original French to twenty different languages according to the Paris review by Mary Blume for The  International Herald Tribune. The play is about a white-on-white painting - or so it seems initially. Then we learn about the friendships of the men involved. Adaptation  of Moliere Art was a hit in Paris in 1994. It first began theatrical life in Berlin, but then quickly moved on. This play of manners garnered  awards in London for comedy and in Germany for the best foreign play of 94. Its a "guy thing" Friendship between men is different, Reeza says. I think it  is terribly rigid. Often men have no real friends, French men at least. They have colleagues, contacts but not friends, and when they do it is very strong, possessive,  rigid. All the men who saw Art said it is amazing, how did you understand this or that? I said I understood nothing, I just noticed. As the characters reveal  themselves through an evening of discussion, which supposedly hinges on the new painting bought by Serge. We learn that the play is not about the painting at all, but  rather about that unique "critter," called male friendship, or male bonding. Each of the three characters clings stubbornly to their view point, somewhere along the lines of "leave
