a number of reasons why already established businesses and commercial enterprises are tending to turn to the Internet in order to expand their marketing strategies and reach a much wider  customer base. For example, using the Internet can reduce the costs of purchasing, assist in managing contacts with suppliers, help in the planning of production and also increase advertising to  both existing and potential customers. This is something which can be seen, for example, in the way in which Barnes and Noble, the publishing company, have been able to expand  their operations into the electronic business world after a somewhat shaky initial start.  If a company is able to offer the customer greater choice, while at the same time facilitating ordering and delivery, by using the Internet  as a medium then it will not only be able to streamline costs but also increase productivity and marketing. Although it is difficult to find up-to-date and reliable data regarding  e-commerce, since the use of the Net is expanding on a daily basis, the US Department of Commerce (2001) estimates that in the three years between 1994 and 1997, there  was an increase of sixty million individuals using the Net, and in the space of twelve months between 1996 and 1997, the number of domain names registered had doubled. Traffic  on the Net in general has, they consider, been doubling every three months or so. It is therefore evident that the Net offers a great deal of potential in terms  of a companys opportunity for increasing its customer base, and that the rapid expansion of the Net will continue until such a base is available on a global scale.
