"Nightline's" Success: A 5 page paper
discussing the
late-night news show. Born of the Iran hostage crisis in
1979, the ABC news show has been running continually for
20 years with Ted Koppel as its anchor. The paper discusses
the general liberal slant of most journalists, the effects of
American families' hectic schedules on their ability to see
network news, and Koppel's mastery of keeping passionate
guests to the issues at hand as some of the reasons for the
show's continued success. Koppel himself deserves much of
the credit for the success of the show, and ABC will need to
carefully select a successor when he retires. Bibliography

and the Decline of the Family Unit : A 5 page
paper that discusses how the common use of the television
has, for the most part, pulled many families further apart.
Television has become a very regular part of our society and
more importantly, of our family life. We prefer to sit and
watch television, whether together or alone, than to sit and
talk with our family. While this makes us more enlightened
about the world and perhaps about society, it does little to
teach us about ourselves and our family. Bibliography lists 4

Influence of the Media on the Columbine Gunmen :
A 6 page thesis paper that argues the point that the influences
of the media, most notably film and music, played a major part
in the tragic shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton,
Colorado. Arguments supporting this thesis include the
parallels between the 1995 film "The Basketball Diaries" and
the method chosen by Klebold and Harris in carrying out their
"Trench Coat Mafia" plan of massacre. Also included are
references to the music of the German band KMFDM and
how these violent lyrics contributed to the mindset of the
killers. Bibliography lists 6 sources. LCColumb.wps
Compromised Media / The Case Against the Tabloidizaton
of the Legitimate Press : A 16 page research paper which
posits that the media has compromised itself by going to bed
with politicians. The writer discusses the medias degraded
position in regard to public trust, and blames its position on a
lack of vision which ranges the Kennedy, Reagan, and Clinton
administrations. Based on Reagans example and the medias
response to it, the writer uses a cowboy metaphor to
describe the relationship between the media and politicians.
The writer lists specific threats to the news media and also
provides solutions. Bibliography lists 25 sources.

Media Bias : The subject is
covered by focusing on a New
York Times article published shortly after the Abner Louima
incident in Brooklyn. This 6 page analysis suggests that,
although this Haitian immigrant was brutalized, it was unfair
for media to blame the police without adequately exploring
the case. Other cases are mentioned in the discussion.
