    traditional - efficient performance - organization? Why is shared information so important in a learning organization as compared to an efficient performance organization?  As the face of business began undergoing fundamental and systemic changes, some organizations were better able to deal with the changes than were others, of course. As many wondered  what was happening around them, others not only were weathering the changes well, but even prospering within them. The concept of organizational learning  emerged as an outgrowth of the study of these successful organizations, along with investigation of those that were not able to meet the challenges with the same degree of success.  Peter Senge had been a consultant and professor for several years as the most dramatic of the systemic shifts unfolded. He published a collection of his observations and  theories in 1990, "instantly" becoming one of the most popular business management theorists of the day. The veracity of his conclusions has been validated repeatedly in ensuing years, as  evidenced by examples furnished by the development of the Ford Mustang and Chrysler minivan, and the experiences of Lexus and BMW. Senges  Theories Senges book, The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization, largely restates many of the observations being made at  the time of its publication in 1990. The primary difference between this work and others contemporary with it is that Senges book provides quantitative analysis of many of the  points he makes. As many of these other works stopped short of reaching what appears to be an obvious conclusion, so too did integration of their messages and daily
