this. The U.S. hand behind Middle East Events One aspect that had stunned the Jewish community in the United States -- not
to mention Israel -- was the so-called shift in U.S. policy to support Palestine. When Israeli tanks rumbled into Ramallah, the base of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, the world was
swift to condemn Israels actions. So was the United States -- which angered the Jewish community by insisting Israel leave Ramallah. While this seemed on the surface to
be an abrupt shift of policy toward support of Palestinian state, Noam Chomsky believes that other, darker factors are at work. His
first contention is that when someone discusses Israeli tanks or Israeli helicopters innovating specific areas of the Middle East, that someone is actually taking a slap at the United States.
This is because the United States has been in the business of supplying Israel with such equipment -- and although there are used by the Israeli army, they are
still American-made. The Chomsky considers that Israel is more and offshore U.S. military base than a country in its own right -- and any actions taken by Israel are
actually actions encouraged by the United States. The reason why Washington condemn Israels actions had nothing to do with the actions themselves -- rather, it had everything to do
with action against Iraq. At the time of the invasion, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney was attempting to gain support from Middle Eastern nations for a possible invasion of
