    weight either by diet, exercise or purging with an attempt to obtain an ideal body weight; however, the individual never has the perception of reaching that ideal weight. Anorexia causes  severe physical damage and in many cases may result in death. The largest portion of the population affected by anorexia is teenage girls and if untreated can lead to a  20% morality rate. Treatment of the disease decreases the mortality rate to 1 to 2% but treatment is a difficult and long process. While 60% of those treated enjoy a  full recovery, 20% continue with the disease and the other 20% relapse back into the disease. Treatments proven to be the most successful are those which combine elements of hospitalization,  psychological counseling on individual, group, family and support levels and some pharmacological treatments to decrease depression. Definition of Anorexia The most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of  Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) specifies that there are currently three diagnosis for eating disorders which are: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and eating  disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS). The DSM-IV specifies that anorexia nervosa is "characterized by a refusal to maintain normal body weight (defined as 15 percent below normal weight for age  and height), an intense fear of becoming fat, and (in females) skipped menstrual periods for at least three months" (Grilo, Sinha, and OMalley, 2002, p. 151). Although anorexia nervosa  is a clinically diagnosed disease, anorexia athletica is not a formal diagnosis but refers to those who compulsively exercise in an attempt to lower their body weight. The compulsive exercising  does not only decrease their body weight to a dangerous level but the compulsive side of the disorder leads to people skipping work or social engagements to exercise instead and
