    parts of the world, it is hard to determine what is American fare. Is there an American cuisine? In delving into the history of food, one can see that clearly,  there is no particular foods that originated in the United States with the exception of recent innovations, because the basics had already surfaced before the country was born. Still, vegetables  like spaghetti squash came about in 1986 ("The Food," 2002). Some vegetables, like spaghetti squash, were created through genetic engineering. Yet, while that is the case, many popular American meals,  like hamburgers and French fries came from Europe and other foods such as the pancake has been rather universal. A look at the history of food in general, can help  one to place just how food came to be and how American fare surfaced. In viewing a food timeline, it becomes apparent that the earliest foods were the simplest.  It was before agriculture and so the food would have to be hunted and water, salt and fish would be some of the basics or some of the earliest forms  of food ("The Food," 2002). While most do not usually consider water to be a food because it does not contain any substances regarded as nutriments, its status as  a foodstuff is somewhat ambiguous (2002). Water has actually been considered both a food and a solvent for food (2002). Next in the timeline is rice, grain,  bread and beer (2002). It would not be until about 9,000 B.C. that goats and sheep would be eaten and pork would become a treat some 2,000 years later  (2002). A list of foods that would arise between 7,000 B.C. and the first century--in no particular order-- include asparagus, Chinese noodles, celery, sausage, pasta, bananas, cabbage, marshmallows, carob, soybean
