flamboyant is found in a difficult situation. He took on high risk financial activity which appeared profitable on the surface and threw lavish parties to celebrate his victories. Many believed
that the company was doing well. Yet, he was soon afterwards asked to resign in light of $45 million of "accounting irregularities" that showed falsely inflated profits. The facts include
the notion that the Chairman was privy to the problem and did ask someone to look into it. However, soon after that, with one suicide and further investigation revealing significant
losses, it was deemed that the Chairman was negligent and asked to leave. Germeten was not made out to be the villain. He did in fact receive outside support as
he did what he was instructed to do, which is to make larger profits. The questions are, what should be done about von Germeten, and what should be done about
Boston Company? In evaluating the case, the only reasonable action is to let the Chairman go and replace him with a more conservative individual. A senior executive at a meeting
regarding Germetens refusal to resign might suggest that he be fired. After all, the opportunity to resign is simply a suggestion and a way to save face. In fact, the
company wants him to leave and the Chairmans opinion at this point is irrelevant. While there is some support for this Chairman, the company crumbled under his watch. Although
he did implement good moves, he was aware that a serious problem might exist and he relied on someone else to take care of the matter. While delegation is good,
he should have followed up. It is true that the Chairman did contribute positively, but the negative aspects of the situation certainly outweigh any measurable progress made by the firm.
