and depression that seems to envelope the rest of her family. From this true story, millions have taken away many messages which have served to uplift their lives. But, have  all the messages been heard? According to two authors, Cynthia Ozick and Bruno Bettelheim, there is more to Anne Frank than meets the eye on the printed page. First, Bruno  Bettelheim states in his book, The Ignored Lesson of Anne Frank, that "The extraordinary world-wide success of the book, play, and movie The Diary of Anne Frank suggest the power  of [peoples] desire to counteract the realization of the personality-destroying and murderous nature of the camps by concentrating all attention on what is experienced as a demonstration that private and  intimate life can continue to flourish even under the direct persecution by the most ruthless totalitarian system"(Bettleheim,1979). This, then, is the ignored lesson that Bettelheim is speaking about. Human beings  have the ability to adapt and overcome any situation. If they do not, obviously, they become extinct like any other life form on the planet. He mentions, also, that  this is partially the problem with Anne Franks family and why their inability to adapt and overcome led to their discovery. Their lives were coming apart. It became quite evident  that anyone of Jewish descent or faith were in terrible danger, yet they chose to stay, hoping that it would go away, or that God would deliver them from this  persecution. However, this ability to survive and adapt did not kick in and was actually overridden by the familys desire to maintain their lifestyles in the way they had for  years.
