The good news here is that Crown Cork is a well-recognized and well-regarded name in the packaging industry. The company could conceivably take  its well-regarded and trusted brand name and leverage it into other auxiliary endeavors to its packaging manufacturing. Size. Thanks to its  takeover of Pechiney International in France, Crown Cork was the largest beverage can producer in the world. Size means more market share, and more visibility. Weaknesses  Asbestos suits. During the 1960s, Crown Cork bought Mundet, a cork bottle cap manufacturer, selling off the insulation part of Mundet approximately three months later  (Burke, 2001). The problem was that Mundets materials had asbestos - and since that time, Crown has continued to pay to settle thousands of asbestos-related claims it had nothing to  do with (Burke, 2001). Little depth in portfolio. Crown Cork is known for primarily one thing - metal can manufacturing. Though  it has carved out a good name and reputation in this particular area, its a limited market. With analysts seeing little, if any, potential growth in this particular industry, Crown  Cork could be vulnerable to falling demand which, in turn, would have a negative impact on its revenues. Leadership. Though William Avery  could be considered a man with new ideas, he had to contend with long-time chairman John F. Connelly, who was part of the "old guard," and had been for awhile.
