    Colorados economy has varied throughout history according to such economic commodities as furs, minerals, railroads, cattle, and agriculture. If one had to choose which of these  commodities had the most significant effect on the state the task would indeed be difficult. As important as each of these commodities has been at various points in history,  however, two of these commodities have had the most definitive impact. Those commodities include the extensive mineral resources of the state and cattle.  The first mineral to exert any real economic impact in Colorado was gold. The importance of gold to Colorados economy over the years, however, has not necessarily  been limited to the value of the gold mined in the state. Indeed, in reality gold was mined only briefly in Colorado. Today, in fact there is no  extensive mining of this mineral. Never-the-less, gold has had a long-lasting impact on Colorado economy. That impact came primarily from the fact that it served as a lure  to entice people into the remote regions of the state. These people came, of course, in the hope that they would  hit a large gold deposit and become wealthy. When the gold mines dried up, however, the people stayed and found other means of livelihood. Thus, the lure exerted  by gold in the early history of the state has had a continued economic spinoff even today as the ancestors of those original explorers and settlers continue to generate resources  which interplay with Colorados contemporary economy.
