An 18 page paper examining Sonera, formerly the wholly state-owned
telephone company of Finland. In Europe, it is known that cellular telephone usage is
skyrocketing but it is generally only the Germans and British mentioned in accounts. For all the
publicity surrounding Vodafone and the German Mannesmann, many have missed the fact that it
has been the Finns that have enjoyed the benefits of having the most advanced telephone company
in Europe and that it has been Sonera that has brought Finland to that distinction. Sonera has
brought Finland to 80% penetration in cellular use and is focusing on wireless Internet services as
its strategy for the future. Sonera holds stakes in cellular providers in several nations, including
the US where it is introducint the GSM standard on which European cellular service has been
based. Includes a SWOT Analysis. Bibliography lists 22 sources.
