Yet, whether or not the media  tends to go one way or the other, does it really affect people all that much? Questions loom large. Does advertising really work, or do people make decisions based on  common sense? Also, how much might media affect individuals as they go about their day to day lives? Media does seem to have an affect on politics and how it  is reported can even make or break an election. For example, during the 2000 presidential campaign, polls began to close on the East coast and it seemed as if the  election was over. Florida would be the key decision-maker in this election, and it was. Yet, the reporting of results throughout the nation was problematic as votes were counted all  day, and polls would be opened in California for three more hours than they were on the East coast. This means that with all the technology, and media reporting, and  media predictions, people would decide whether or not it is worthwhile to leave their homes and vote. Some say that the media has a detrimental effect on elections. Some  believe that the media was set on Gore. They contend that even if one contested media surveys that unexpectedly showed Bush ahead, that would abruptly cease to be a  crime against democracy (Crowley 18). When the Heralds Miami-Dade undervote count provided a small Gore gain, Republicans were happy to set aside media-bashing and applaud the new  count (18).
