was a movement of the early and mid 1990s which served to provide youth with a voice of rebellion in a society that had little going on. It was a  time of peace, a time which had seen the fall of the Communist threat, a time when music was boring, and time when the youth cried out, as they do,  for something which could belong to them in their time of rebellion and discovery. The grunge movement began in Seattle, Washington, a place known for its unique approach to life.  It was a movement that drew the attention of the entire country, even top fashion designers. In the following paper we examine this movement, the reason for its popularity and  its influence today. Grunge History "The Grunge generation is said to have originated as a marriage between Seattles hesher and punk scenes. The hesher scene consists of someone  who listens to metal or thrash music." (Benner, 2001; grunge2.htm). Their particular style of dress involved acid-washed pants and leather jackets which possessed randomly placed band names. both sexes  wore their hair long. "The punk scene is both a form of music and a way of life. Punk rockers tend to think everything should include anarchy or some kind  of rebellion" (Benner, 2001; grunge2.htm). Many in the punk scene were individuals who held that anarchy was the best way to approach life as "Society as we know it is  both artificial and rotten and should be rejected...Grunge holds very little of punks philosophies as valuable" (Benner, 2001; grunge2.htm). In terms of the punk rock look, almost anything was acceptable:  "Along with their philosophy comes the look of punk rock. Punk rockers attire consist of ripped clothes, wearing clothes inside out, spikes, and leather. Their hair is another story though.
