However, as every country in the world has an economic status, and if we are to understand the less well known countries, either for the purposes of trade,  social examination or cultural consideration, an examination of the economic situation may be of great relevance. Here we will consider the country of Iraq.  When we look at Iraq we associate the county with Saddam Husayn, however, he only the latest leader in a line of military men that have rulers the  country. As an economy that relies on oil it was Saddam Husayn that was responsible for the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. However, they were ejected with support for  Kuwait by western forces lead by American and the United Kingdom. This may not appear to have much relevant today, but we need to remember that it was as a  result of these actions and the subsequent event s and failure to comply with international requirements that have resulted in economic sanctions being put on the country.  The result of this has been hardship and poverty with high levels of inflation, some times increasing at more than 100% in a year (CIA,  2001). The sanctions mean that only food stuffs and medicine and some manufactured goods can be imported, this places a great strain on an economy that is not self sufficient.  The result of this is that there is a thriving black market. Most goods can be obtained, but they are very expensive.  For example, we can look at the wages of a professional, (in 1999). The wages of junior hospital doctor were in the region of 3,500 Iraqi dinars a
