    appears to be a small South American city. There is destruction all around. The story opens with a young girl stuck in mud, stuck up to her chin. A news  reporter comes in, Rolf Carle, to witness and then tries to save her. He stays there for several days, hoping and praying that a water pump can be brought in  to take out the water and then the rubble and then the girl can be saved. He loses himself in her, and at the same time becomes free in the  sense that he finally accepts his past and his own self. In the end she dies and Rolf is still working towards coming to terms with himself. Characters  There are three primary characters in the story. There is Rolf, the young girl Azucena, and the narrator who is Rolfs partner/mate, someone we assume is a woman though it  is never stated as such. Rolf is a news reporter who, according to the narrator, has always remained aloof in the face of danger. He has never allowed his emotions  to show and we find that this is all due to his painful childhood. The narrator witnesses the unfolding events trying hard to assist Rolf somehow, even if only mentally.  The narrator makes phone calls and pleas, as well, in terms of finding a pump. Then there is the girl who has essentially resigned herself to death from the beginning  it seems. She serves as a mirror and a door for Rolf, allowing him to see his own sense of entrapment and his own identity. Conflict The primary  conflict of the story involves trying to save the young girl form the mud pit. But this conflict only serves as a foundation for the conflict within Rolf who has
