Colin Powell was born on April 5, 1937 to Jamaican immigrants, Luther and Maud Powell(Powell 1995). They later moved to South Bronx and he attended public schools. Later, through the
ROTC program he received a commission to the Army. However, while there he would encounter whites only counters at the Woolworths near his base. While all the sit-ins were going
on, Powell determined that he would attack racism from another route: make a success of himself. And this he did. As he
rose in the ranks he served two tours of duty in Vietnam, was wounded, then served again in Korea. His career always continued to advance and everywhere he went, for
the most part he was able to make alliances which would stand him in good stead in his later years. Washington loved Powell. He was an enigma to most of
them, it has to be thought. He was a well educated black man, successful, who spoke out firmly against affirmative action. Powell didnt fit into any stereotype or pigeon hole
that they could cook up for him. This made him unique, and this made him many friends. Gulf War: However, he
