Some get away from their humdrum lives with the use of substances that serve to expand their minds, and others through their  work; actors, artists, and writers become someone else for a time. They create. Gregor was just a salesman, but when he woke up in the morning, he had morphed into  a bug. Of course, that is not a real story. It is the creation of Franz Kafka, the German writer who came up with a story he called The Metamorphosis.  Kafkas works tend to be controversial and subject to interpretation. Critical commentary on Kafkas works, inclusive of Metamorphosis written in 1915 generally pays attention to the protagonist like the  "traveling salesman-turned-vermin Gregor Samsa" (Goldstein, 2000, p.133). The obvious interpretation here might be, as Goldstein sees it, that Kafka looks at individuals struggling to safeguard their illusory lives  which are well isolated from oppressive opponents (2000). In essence, people walk around and just engage in their routines. They do not think much nor are they attracted to  change. Human beings basically avoid pain and go towards pleasure, and they are inherently lazy. Gregor was just a salesman, much like Willy Loman in Arthur Millers Death of a  Salesman. Of course, unlike Loman, it is Gregor who is given the raw deal even though he is a rather kind soul. In Metamorphosis, the vulnerable vermin-child is mortally wounded  (Goldstein, 2000). One can in fact see Gregor in this way, and while the explanation for the bizarre event has been largely seen in hidden traumas, the psychopathology of fictional  characters along with the author, are sometimes overlooked (2000). For instance, Gregor is a traveling salesman who had been abused by his boss, and suffered due to the
