vernacular refers to it as an aha! moment. Often, such moments result in an ability to see the world more clearly and to learn from people and experiences in
a totally different way. The student will want to consider their own lives to determine a moment in which such an occurrence might have happened and then follow the
example given to present the story. The first step is to provide background on the experience - what brought you to a point where change was possible.
I had lived all of my adult life in a fairly large city and most of my life in places where people of all social levels, racial mixes and point
of views were present. I grew up with a curiosity concerning how people and places came to be the way they were. Naturally, I became a sociologist by
inclination and a social worker by trade. I was also a child of the sixties- believing that changing the world begins with changing the individual. My idealism
has often gotten in the way of reality. Ive always wanted the world to be the one I have conceptualized within my mind - one that makes sense and
operates under the principles of love and caring for each other. In the modern world this can be a handicap. I was employed as an outreach worker
for a mental health agency - working with the homeless. These were people who, for the most part, had given up the dream of a perfect world and had
retreated into a world of their own. Many of them simply rejected whatever they saw as worthless - including themselves. It would be an easy out to
