    Notes: Understanding the difference between leadership and management is critical to understanding how personality and other abstract qualities such as charisma and personal values are tied to effectively leadership.  In short, managers are the ones who should handle particular issues of policy at the task-level; leaders, by contrast, should focus almost entirely on establishing a foundational organizational culture from  which all policies and strategies will be derived. Slide 2: Personality A strong personality is critical to quality leadership A leader must be capable of "selling the vision" (Bass,  1990) When a leader generates excitement over vision and culture, workers... Become more personally invested in the organization Become more committed Produce better results Notes: In order for a  leader to effectively establish an organizational culture, he or she must be able to "sell the vision" (Bass, 1990). Once a vision of the organizations future is established, it is  up to the leader to generate excitement over that vision, and thus drive commitment and loyalty from workers. This will engage workers at the level of values and attitude, and  foster personal investment, but it requires great charisma from the leader. Slide 3: Courage and Ethics in Leadership Intangible value-oriented qualities are also important in leadership, such as:  Courage Strong sense of ethics and morality personal integrity If a leader is seen as lacking morals or credibility, this will undermine the legitimacy of his or her power and  reduce his or her ability to sell the organizational vision and culture ("Transformative", 2010). Notes: Courage and a strong ethical sensibility are critical for the leader who hopes  to engage employees and have them buy into the organizational vision. Personal integrity is of the utmost importance in attracting followers, as no one will want to follow a leader
