    Although not categorized as a distinct political unit until the 1920s, the history of Northern Ireland actually began in the early 1700s with the confiscation of  land and the forced infusion of Scottish and English settlers into the region. That set the stage for what would be centuries of turmoil and political strife. Many  authors have written about this period but none so movingly as William Butler Yeats. Indeed, Yeats is recognized by many as one of the greatest poets of the Twentieth  Century. He is noted for his revival of legend and Ricrucian symbols, a revival which often resulted in a sense of romanticism and awe in the reader. His  writing imparts a sense of religious awe, of the majesty of life, and of the power of God and the concept of righteousness. Author George Macbeth knowingly comments that  Yeats responded to: "life with such a consistently affirmative and positive note".  (Rice University, 2000). Indeed, it is these characteristics which  may account for Yeats continuing appeal to readers who dont normally pay much attention to poetry. His poem "Come Gather Round Me, Parnellites", a popular pub song in Ireland,  differs somewhat from his earlier work. It encapsulates the idealism and the bitterness of the Irish Civil War. It also encapsulates the societal stature in which the  Irish robed their heroes. Also apparent in "Come Gather Round Me, Parnellites" is its ability to bring to our consciousness such of Parnellites actions which may not have been
