    In order to look at the relationship between knowledge and  power in managerial relations, it is helpful to consider the way in which power can be defined, and the different ways in which it can be exemplified in the workplace.  For example, it could be asserted that power is simply the ability to be able to do something; however, it is difficult to exert power without the cooperation of other  people, and therefore power can only be expressed through the dynamics of social relationships.  In an employment situation, the power relationship between the workforce and management is one which categorises the aims and objectives of the work  which is being carried out and the way in which the work will be done. As long as this relationship is satisfactory to both sides, this will be a successful  interaction. However, if it becomes unacceptable to one side or they other, then they may seek to adapt it so that it becomes more balanced. The structure of the power  relationship is basically dependent on which side determines the objectives which are to be achieved and means which are to be employed in order to do this.  Jarvis (2002) makes the point that there  are a number of checks and balances which prevent those who theoretically have the most power from wielding it as they choose.
