Stem cell research constitutes one of the most  promising areas of scientific investigation that is currently being conducted, as the benefits from this line of research promise to be akin to the miraculous. The therapeutic applications that have  been proposed include generating different types neurons that can aid in the treatment of Alzheimers patients, as well as individuals who have incurred spinal cord injuries or suffer from Parkinsons  disease (Baird, 2008). Through stem cell research it may become possible to produce heart muscle cells that benefit heart attack victims or insulin-producing cells that can be used in the  treatment of diabetes (Baird, 2008). However, stem cell research is controversial due to moral issues surrounding the harvesting of stem cells from human embryos. An examination to the objections to  embryonic stem cell research will show that these arguments, while having some validity from certain religious viewpoints, are primarily based on misconceptions concerning the process of harvesting stem cells, as  well as misconceptions about fertilization and the process of conception. Due to arguments presented by those who oppose embryonic stem cell research, in 2001, President George W. Bush limited  federal funding in regards to embryonic cell research, limiting research to only those cell lines that were already in existence (DeGrazia, 2006). While this action was countermanded by the Obama  administration, the issue remains active in American society and is hotly contested.
