The question is valid and not so easy  to answer. After all, by pushing patients out the door, or providing a larger nurse per patient ratio, patient care may be compromised. Also, minimizing patient stays does not necessarily  cut the hospitals bottom line nor increase profits. What costs hospitals money? As with any business or organization, staffing is a significant expense as salaries mean taxes and benefits, something  that substantially drains budgets. Not only that but hospitals have to contend with rising cost of supplies. Pharmaceuticals for example are very expensive. The costs in this industry has been  a concern and in fact when it was thought that the nation might need a costly, hard to obtain antibiotic to treat Anthrax, concerns over the patent for that medicine  came into play. The fact that the medication is patented means that the one company that makes the drug can charge virtually what they want. Questions loom large in this  domain. Should pharmacy costs be so high? How does it affect hospital costs? While the costs are passed onto the hospital, and eventually to the client, it is often the  insurance company that foots that bill. While that is the case, insurance rates rise, and in the end, the high cost of health care is split by all concerned.
