An example of how to introduce the main character: This story is about Han Schnier, who is the son of a man who made a fortune in the
coal mining business. His parents were Protestants but he was sent to a Catholic school as a child. Despite being the son of a wealthy man, Schnier is
disillusioned with the world. Schnier is 27 when the book opens. The story takes place in the 1960s in Bonn, Germany, and Schnier narrates the story himself. Much
of this story is told in the form of past recollections and telephone conversations. Some surreal moments are included by Heinrich - such as when he can actually smell
through the telephone. Much reference is made to an earlier Germany and to the Nazi party specifically. These references refer, of
course, to when he was a child. In fact, he tenderly relays several incidents including his parents and their protection during that turbulent time in history. For example,
he recalls when his mother stole a piece of ham just so she could feel it to her family. In another example, he recalls when his father stood up
to a Nazi Youth Leader in defense of him and some of his friends. It was certainly an act of courage on his fathers part and Schnier recalls it
