    it is similar to the basic idea presented by Clayton Alderfer in his book, Existence, Relatedness and Growth. Motivation, after all, can be described as the degree to which  an individual wants and chooses to behave in certain ways at a given time and place. Getting up in the morning because of the need to experience a particular  taste is just one example in a world filled with motivation. Motivational theories are espoused for a myriad of reasons and utilized in a number of settings. The theory  provided by Alderfer seems most at home in the area of organizational management. To this end, the definition of motivation may well be more appropriately termed as objectives and  goals. Perhaps the motivation for getting out of bed isnt the smell and temptation of coffee, but the need to make a living, to provide food and shelter  for oneself. Or it could be the individual receives a great deal of satisfaction from the social interaction of a work environment. Many people are gratified and motivated  by the sense of accomplishment their work, school or family experiences provide. In order to understand the perspective taken by Alderfer the reader needs to have at least  a modicum of knowledge about Maslows theory of motivation. Maslow thought that man is motivated primarily by need. He framed these needs into a hierarchy of five categories  of needs: physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization. An individual progresses through the hierarchy as the needs of each level are met. His theory seems to focus on  extrinsic needs and only incidentally takes into consideration the intrinsic needs. There are a number of problems with Maslows theory presents and Alderfers attempts to rectify. Among
