    No business will operate independently of the external environment. Internal factors will also play a role ion the success and choices a company makes.  There are many models, the most popular are SWOT, PESTEL, and Porters Five Forces. These have some common considerations, but all bring a different perspective to the examination  of a company and the environment within which it operates. A well known company such as Wal-Mart is international, having bought the supermarket chain Asda in the UK the name  is becoming increasing prominent. Wal-Mart started in 1962 when the first store was opened by Sam Walton, the man who was to be the driving force behind the success  and culture of the company, a company that has now grown the over 3,000 stores in the United States and over 1,000 internationally (Wal-mart.com, 2001). To understand this company a  SWOT analysis may be conducted. The student may wish to add to these lists or give different examples. SWOT; Strengths In the  US Wal-Mart is the dominant supermarket chain, with a high level of brand recognition. One of the main enduring strengths may be seen in the corporate culture. This is a  customer focused culture which was summed up very well in the words of Sam Walton, "The secret of successful retailing is to give your customers what they want. And really,  if you think about it from your point of view as a customer, you want everything: a wide assortment of good quality merchandise; the lowest possible prices; guaranteed satisfaction with  what you buy; friendly, knowledgeable service; convenient hours; free parking; a pleasant shopping experience." - Sam Walton (1918-1992) (quoted at Wal-Mart.com, 2002).
