    company to produce the appliance--the firm has branched out. Since bought by larger corporations, the Frigidaire brand continues to be an American symbol of ingenuity. While the firm is doing  fairly well, it keeps a low profile and just manages to keep pace with its competitors. In a shaky economy, the future of this company is unknown, but what can  be said is that Frigidaire is an American manufacturing company that has lasted almost a century. II. Company History The first commercially viable electric household refrigerator  had been made and sold in 1913 ("Frigidaire Historical," 2001). Then, in 1915, Alfred Mellowes created an electric refrigerating unit with a compressor located at the bottom of the  cabinet (2001). This was new. The Guardian Refrigerator Company was created to manufacture and sell Mellowess creation a year later (2001). The product was good, but the company was  hurting financially which slowed production (2001). In 1918, W.C. Durant, who was president of General Motors at the time, privately purchased the firm and gave it a new name,  Frigidaire (2001). The rest, as they say, is history. Some highlights for the company include the creation of ice cream cabinets in 1923, soda fountain equipment in 1924, milk  coolers in 1927 and drinking water coolers that same year ("Frigidaire Historical," 2001). Frigidaire would expand its appliance line to include household laundry equipment, as well as  automatic dishwashers and food waste disposers during the 1950s (2001). The 1970s were not good for the company and in January of 1979, General Motors announced that  it sold Frigidaire to White Consolidated Industries (2001). The Frigidaire name would continue on (2001). Today, parent companies include both White Consolidated Industries Inc. and Electrolux AB ("Frigidaire
