is not only the sufferers themselves who are affected, but also friends and families indicating that this is a condition with a potentially high social cost. The severity may vary,  but there is little doubt many suffering from this condition deserve effective treatment. Treatments for depression can vary, from in patient treatment and prescription drugs through to the use of  differing types of therapy. One of the therapeutic treatments used is cognitive therapy treatment (CBT). The treatment first emerged in the 1960s with the developments of Alan Beck targeting an  adjustment of thinking processes (Stern, 2001; McGinn, 2001). It has been in use since that date, but the results reported for the benefit of this treatment appear to be mixed.  The aim of this research is to determine whether or not CBT is effective at alleviating the symptoms of depression. 1.1 Research Questions and Hypothesis To assess the issue  there will be the use of statistical testing as it is necessary to look at the situation for the general population effected rather than individual case studies. This will require  the formulation of a hypothesis which may be tested, along with a null hypothesis. The hypothesis is; H1 = The use of CBT for the treatment of patients suffering from  depression will result in a superior alleviation of symptoms compared to patients/clients suffering from depression treated with alterative therapies. The null hypothesis is; H0 = The use of  CBT for treatment of patients suffering from depression will not result in any significantly superior results compared to patients/clients being treated with alternate therapies. To assess this there will  be a number of questions which will need to be answered. These will include; * What is meant by the term depression and how will it be applied to this
