Diabetes : A 5 page paper overview of Type I
diabetes mellitus, or insulin-dependent diabetes. Formerly
referred to only as juvenile diabetes, it was thought in the past
that children were affected with only this type of diabetes. As it
has become known that anyone of any age can be afflicted with
either Type I or Type II, the term juvenile diabetes has fallen
out of favor, but its effects are the same regardless of how it is
labeled aside from the particular ways it affects children: They
often are larger than other children their age and many go
through puberty sooner than their non-diabetic friends.

Insulin Synthesis Using Recombinant Plasmid DNA :
A 5 page paper discussing methods of constructing this plasmid
containing a gene for human insulin. As much as 5 percent of
the population may be affected by diabetes, a disease of
carbohydrate metabolism in which the sufferer of the disease is
unable to absorb glucose from the blood. Insulin for injection
has been extracted from other animals until only recently.
Though bovine insulin will work for human diabetes control, the

Ramadan / Fasting's Impact Upon Muslim Diabetics :
7 pages in length. The extensive fasting performed during the
holy months of Ramadan may have its roots firmly planted in
the individual's spiritual development; however, for the diabetics
who practice this sacred tradition, it poses grave consequences
to their ability to effectively manage the disease. It is a known
fact that the one aspect of diabetes that cannot be overlooked is
the ability to eat small amounts several times a day. Without
the appropriate levels of proteins and sugars available to the
system, the fasting diabetic only serves to severely complicate
his or her condition, ultimately threatening the chances for
survival. The writer discusses the fasting of Ramadan as it
relates to Muslim diabetics. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Effects of Exercise on Osteoarthritis in the Elderly :
A 6 page paper discussing the benefits possible at any age of
using exercise to reduce the effects of osteoarthritis. Exercise
can improve quality of life for older adults in several areas, but
it also carries practical benefits as well. Aside from the
standard measures of effects on hypertension and ability to
sleep, it also can help to improve stability in movement and
therefore help to prevent falls, important in itself as the most
rapidly growing segment of the American population are those
over 75 years. Studies indicate that whether aerobic or for
endurance and flexibility, proper exercise can help slow the
progress of the disease. Bibliography lists 15 sources.
